Troop Program

Troop 4 regularly supports Council and District camping opportunities: Spring and Fall Camporees, and Score-O, In addition, Troop 4 has an active Hiking and Backpacking program that has taken us to trails in Oklahoma, New Mexico, and places like Caprock Canyon State Park. We have trained Rock Climbing and Tower Instructors , and visit Lake Mineral Wells State Park, and both Hermit's Cave and Devil's Den at the Sid Richardson Scout Ranch in Bridgeport. We also have a BSA Lifeguard to assist in planning aquatic activities like Canoe-Camping at Sid.

Troop 4 meets regularly on Monday nights from 7:00PM to 8:30PM in the Bessant House at Memorial Baptist Church, 3000 William D. Tate Ave.

The Boy-Led Troop

Empowering boys to be leaders is the core of Scouting. Scouts learn by doing, and what they do is lead their patrols and their troop.
Each August, the scouts plan the activities for the next year. Working within the Longhorn Council and Lakeview district planned events, our scouts set performance and destination objectives that will provide the framework for fun, growth, and challenge.
Twice each year the scouts elect a Senior Patrol Leader who is in charge of the troop meetings and who chairs the patrol leaders council. With the patrol leaders, it is his job to keep the troop program on track, and to lead the group. In addition, there are several appointed positions of responsibility such as Quartermaster who works closely with the troop committee in managing troop equipment, the Scribe who works mainly with advancements, the Historian who organizes information about the troop activities, the Librarian who manages troop reference materials, and the Chaplain Aide who assists in religious services for the troop.

The Boy Scouts of America uses eight fundamental methods to meet boys' hope for fun and adventure, and to achieve Scouting's aim of encouraging character development, citizenship, and mental and physical fitness. A Scout troop functions best when all eight methods are employed.

Advancement

We strongly believe in the Boy Scout Advancement Program that encourages boys to meet significant challenges that lead to personal growth. All Troop members are encouraged to excel, and that applies to the adult leaders as well. Troop 4 counts several of our members as Twin Arrows Junior Leaders graduates. Our scouts have held office in the Order of the Arrow Lodge, served as Staff at Twin Arrows, participated in the National Junior Leaders' Training Course at Philmont, and many have been recognized with the religious emblem award of their faith. Many of our young men have achieved Eagle Scout. The adult leaders at Troop 4 have regularly passed the Scoutmasters' Fundamentals Course, and three of our Scoutmaster Corps members have completed Wood Badge. Our adults have always generously participated as counselors at Merit Badge College, and we have counselors for all Eagle-required badges.
